We would like to celebrate seniors who made an impact. Please tell us about a graduating senior who you feel is worthy of special note, and why.
None of them are MEP but Sloan Liu, Edison Grauman, Ali Elimawagi, and Luis Barragan for leading SlugSat this year and helping us accomplish so SO much
Is there a faculty or staff person who made a difference for you?
Stephen Petersen cause he might seem like a scary grumpy old man but tbh he really just cares about you as a student. He really just wants to see everyone understand the topic and doesn't care about the rigamarol of traditional memorizing and spewing out facts and information from cramming for an exam but rather wants to see that you understand the concepts and can still work your way through the problem. He just cares that people are ready for the real world when they finish at UCSC.
We know that this journey has been long. Please tell us about anyone you'd like to thank.
Jen!!!
Getting to graduation isn't easy. Are there any resources on campus that helped you make it this far? How so?
FINANCIAL AID. I could NOT have afforded to to come here on my own. Luckily I had a 529 account I could drain as needed to pay the university but I don't think I know many people who can say they graduated with only just over $15k in debt.
College has its ups and downs. Would you share with us a favorite moment?
Just in general the camaraderie of the community.
Any advice for students starting in Fall 2020?
Don't NOT trust the major advisors. But let me put it to you this way. Listen to the people who are ACTUALLY enrolled and ACTUALLY in the major. You'll save yourself a LOT of headaches. REACH OUT TO YOUR PEERS, It's more than likely that they're IN the same boat currently OR had been in that situation previously!!

Jennifer Wood: She is the first counselor I've had that has taken in interest in what we as engineering student do. Jen would always change the MEP room into a place where we can feel safe and vulnerable to the stress that surrounds us. She has always offered her help where she can and I have become a better student and person because of her presence in MEP.
We know that this journey has been long. Please tell us about anyone you'd like to thank.

College has its ups and downs. Would you share with us a favorite moment?
It's hard to pick one, but the best that come to mind is the 'AH-HA' moments that we get when we're stuck in a difficult problem. This can be on an assignment, lab, or project. That moment where you've found out the answer to your problem just gives you the motivation you need and reassures you are in the right place.
Any advice for students starting in Fall 2020?
Use your resources, for me MEP was enough to help me but for you it might be a million other things. Listen to the upperclassmen and their advice because they're the ones that already lived what you're going through.

I am very grateful for Snigdha Chaturvedi. She is kind, attentive to the needs of her students, and willing to spend extra time to help them succeed. I also value that she raised such important topics as diversity and bias in tech, and encouraged the 'can do' attitude. Moreover, I appreciate all the hard work by Richard Jullig. He is truly passionate about leveling up the skills of future engineers. It was great to learn about technical debt, clean code, agile development, and the importance of good documentation early on. Richard's mentorship and support were very important to me. I am also thankful for Ethan Miller and his System Design class. Ethan is a strict but very fair professor. By sharing industry insights, practical solutions, and demanding a high-quality standard, he ensures that his students are ready for the industry. Additionally, it was very important to me that he would always offer a helping hand when asked. Lastly, thanks to David Draper, I discovered a pure love for Statistics. It helps me look at the world through a different prism, think more critically about the information I receive, and make more conscious decisions.
We know that this journey has been long. Please tell us about anyone you'd like to thank.
I want to thank Jennifer Wood for always being there for me! Her kindness, ability to listen, empathize, encourage, and support were priceless. It meant a lot to me during these years, and I admire her for that. Moreover, I want to thank Evangeline Mahmoodi for her compassion, resourcefulness, and ability to see things through and call them out as they are. Additionally, I appreciate Maia Dupuis! She has the biggest heart and brings radiant joy in my life. I also want to thank Annie Shen for her guidance, understanding, honesty, and friendship. Finally, I am very grateful for MEP. I met wonderful people, learned a lot from them, and lived through many exciting moments together. Thank you, family!

One of my favorite moments had to be the Mechatronics Final Project Showcase in Fall Quarter 2020. Although our group's bot was disqualified immediately after spazzing out and leaving the arena, I had the best time seeing everyone's struggle finally come to an end and spend quality time with my peers.
Any advice for students starting in Fall 2020?
Join MEP early and take advantage of the available resources. A big problem for me was that I was not aware of the many programs that were on campus and found myself too drained from schoolwork to set aside time in these programs. However, I found that I ultimately regret not sacrificing that time to be a part of something bigger on campus.

Lilee Chavez. Lilee is what I see when I think of a strong woman. She battles so much and at the same time achieves even more. No matter how overwhelmed and overworked she is, she always makes time to help others achieve their goals. She tutored me in CE 150, she helped me prepare for my interviews, she was a cheerleader when I needed one. And she always, no matter how bad she was feeling, checked to make sure my health was ok! Let us please celebrate the woman I now consider one of my closest friends, Lilee Chavez!

Professor Darrell Long. He wrote a letter of recommendation for me to work at CERN over the summer. I got the position, and I know it was in part for his help. Unfortunately the program got canned because of Coronavirus. Professor Heiner Litz. He took me into his lab after I took one of his classes and that is how I got first got exposed to Storage Systems. I literally work as a Systems Engineer in the Storage Systems branch of Intel, so I think it is fair to say that he influenced me a lot. Ms. Jenn. Whenever I needed help, whether it came to starting a business, graduating in time, or getting interview help, Ms. Jenn was there to help me. Even if she didn't have all the answers, she knew who to ask and where to look for them. Invaluable human resource.

I would like to thank all of my professors. My professors at community college, and my professors here at UCSC. I would also like to explicitly thank Ms. Jenn for all the help that she gives us at MEP.
Getting to graduation isn't easy. Are there any resources on campus that helped you make it this far? How so?
The MEP program. From an Alumni event, I got my first industry internship, which eventually lead to my post undergrad job. I got to participate in my first conference (MESA SLC), which led me to meet so many excellent people who I am now able to call my friends. On a different note, I got to have a space with friendly people from all walks of life. That was also a huge supporting structure in my academic career.
College has its ups and downs. Would you share with us a favorite moment?
Ups: Water Polo Season. I have made some of my best friends from water polo and I loved every second of being on the team. Downs: Coronavirus cancelling on-campus spring quarter.

ETTP (Engineering Transfer Transition Program) - Introduced me to other engineering transfer students before starting Fall quarter. MEP - Great resource and connection to like-minded students STARS (Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students) - I was awarded multiple scholarships through STARS that helped me achieve my degree. DRC (Disability Resource Center) - Really supportive and good resources. LSS (Learning Support Services) and MSI (Modified Supplemental Instruction) - I attended as many extra study sessions as allowed by my schedule.

I would like to thank everyone in MEP as you all have at some point in these two years gave me support and inspiration which helped me accomplish great things. If I could go back in time, I would join MEP my freshmen year because MEP really changed my perspective of college and engineering.

Even though I joined MEP my 3rd of college, I felt that it was very helpful to meet other students that are in the same area of study as I am because those students have knowledge and experience that can be passed on to other students. When was a freshmen and sophomore, I didn't know about MEP so I felt that I didn't have any support and that I had to be better than others in order to survive the college life. Not having support, I felt the need to be more competitive and sometimes very insecure. Joining MEP helped me figure out that it's not about competition because everyone is trying to survive this and working together increases everyone's chance of making it through. Having MEP tutoring also helped as other tutoring services didn't have the same vibe as MEP. When I was tutored in MEP, I felt more comfortable and more supported compared to other tutoring services such as MSI because people in MEP are family.

Don't let other people tell you that you can't do something just because they can't do it. You should always plan things out because "Chance favors the prepared mind". If you plan ahead, you will always have a higher chance at something compared to others. College isn't about speed, it's about experience. Some people who graduate in 3 years or 4 years take forever to get a job while some people who graduate in 5 years get hired immediately after graduation. Whether it takes you 3 years, 4 years, or 5 years to get a degree, it's not about the time you put in, it's about what you accomplish and the experience you get based on the time you put in. Failure isn't an option, it's an opportunity to do better. The next time you make an important decision, think about the consequences, pros, and cons as well as how your experience will change based on your decision. It's never one thing. College isn't just about studying. College isn't just about partying either. It should be "perfectly balanced, as all things should be."
