Undergraduate Research, Scholarship And Internship Opportunities

The path to a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) degree can be different for each student. Many students find that an internship or research experience enhances coursework learning and prepares them for graduate school and the workforce. Discuss your goals with MEP staff and peer mentors to find out what is available to you!

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

 The Undergraduate Research Opportunities website goals are:

  1. To assist all UCSC undergraduates to engage in the world-class research accomplished at UCSC and/or other programs or institutions;
  2. To provide a central clearing house to help faculty, staff, prospective students, and the community become aware of the wide array of research resources in the region available to undergraduates
  3. To increase awareness of the importance of UCSC undergraduate contributions to research.

Research Mentoring Institute

The Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering offers the Research Mentoring Institute to support diversity at UCSC and in genomic research by providing scholarships and mentored research training for underrepresented students. The RMI offers academic and professional advising, hands-on research training, and a $1500 scholarship for qualified UCSC undergraduates who are interested in genomic science and its ethical, legal, or social implications (ELSI). Sponsored by the National Human Genome Research Institute, the RMI awards  support the NHGRI's goal to increase the numbers and capabilities of minority scientists, science professionals, and ethicists.

UCSC STEM Diversity Programs

MARC, IMSD, UC LEADS and CAMP students are invited to attend an eight-week Summer Research Institute (SRI) or Summer Research Experience (SRE). During the SRI students are introduced to the theoretical and practical aspects of laboratory research. Under the guidance of UCSC faculty, students develop expertise in areas that are basic to participation in a research laboratory. Students who complete this institute are eligible to begin research in a lab on campus starting the following fall. Fieldtrips and workshops are incorporated into each summer in order to prepare our students for their research experiences.

Apply for Summer Research Institute or Experience Programs

In addition, during the academic year these programs offer a Lunchtime Professional Development Workshop Series.  Check their website for current schedule.

Pathways To Science

Pathways to Science is a project of the Institute for Broadening Participation (IBP). Pathways to Science supports pathways to the STEM fields: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We place particular emphasis on connecting underrepresented groups with STEM programs, funding, mentoring and resources. Use this website to find programs such as undergraduate summer research opportunities, scholarships, graduate fellowships, postdoctoral positions, as well as resources and materials pertaining to recruitment, retention, and mentoring.
