Advising

MEP provides academic advising and personal counseling to help students build familiarity with the university and campus resources, and to foster a broad range of learning outcomes and success among all students. MEP students receive one-on-one advisement by appointment and/or on a drop-in basis. You can seek assistance from one of our MEP Peer Mentors or schedule an appointment with the Director. For updating your MEP Report Card, please stop by the Peer Mentor's office hours.

Tutorial Services

Are you feeling that your course progress is not as firmly under control as you thought it would be? If so, then perhaps you might want to take advantage of tutoring services that are available through MEP.  These FREE tutoring services, offered one-on-one and in small study groups, are separate from the BSoE departments' course tutor and reader positions. Students are first encouraged to take full advantage of the TA office hours and the course tutor (if there's one) and Learning Support Services prior to seeking MEP tutorial assistance.

Tutoring Assistance

MEP employs peer tutors who are able to assist students in certain courses. MEP members who seek assistance to help overcome difficulties with academic coursework will be required to agree to minimum expectations and provide a cash deposit. Be advised that MEP usually provides tutoring for SOE upper division major courses such as EE 101 and CMPE 100 and common lower division major courses like CMPE 12 and CMPS 12B. Should you need assistance in other courses we ask that you also look into ACE, Learning Support Services and Modified Supplemental Instruction (see below).

Deadline to request tutoring every quarter is the Add/Drop/Swap deadline. Steps to receive tutoring:

  1. Fill out the MEP Tutoring Request form;
  2. Turn in cash deposit to Peer Mentor;
  3. Peer Mentor will then email you and the tutor to commence tutoring;
  4. If you fulfilled the expectation, upon commencement of following quarter your deposit will be returned

Work as a MEP Tutor

MEP seeks to employ qualified students who are interested in helping other students to learn. MEP members who are in good academic standing and who have earned a grade of B or better in specific courses, are encouraged to complete a BSoE Tutor Application form. Please email the MEP Peer Mentor almillan@ucsc.edu.

Lending Library

MEP is happy to provide a lending library service. Books are lent out by quarter and it is requested that you return them by the end of finals. Come by the Director's office to see which textbooks are available. If you email, be advised that it may take longer.

Study Center

The MEP Study Center (Baskin 399) is a focal point for MEP students. This facility is available 24-hours (with electronic ID card access) and provides a unique environment where students can either study quietly or in groups, as well as gather for informal meetings or to socialize and relax with other MEP students. Use of these facilities requires approval and submission into the MESA Engineering Program.

To access the scanner and MEP computer, you need a SOE account. If there is a problem in the Study Center, please email the MEP Study Center Coordinator - Ronuel aka "Ronjie" Tan.
